In this article, we are thinking about when to take breaks from tasks for self-care and for how long so it’s quick and effective. Sound good? What if I also told you that on top of that, it increases your focus, attention span, and overall productivity too?

To do this, we’re going to explore Cal Newport’s idea of ‘Deep Breaks’.

“Anyone who regularly succeeds in long deep work sessions is almost certainly someone skilled at deploying deep breaks to keep the session going without burning out or losing focus.” — Cal Newport (On Deep Breaks — Study Hacks)

The process of ‘Deep Work’ can be applied to any task. It just means that for a period of time, your full attention is dedicated to only that task, no distractions. The idea is that when we micro-focus on that one task, it is completed better and within a smaller time frame than if we let other things pull us from this deeply focused state. As stated in the quote above, we’re going to pair deep work with deep breaks. I encourage you to use those ‘deep breaks’ for self-care.

1. List 10 self-care habits you can do within 5–10 minutes.
