How to Boost Coziness This Winter
How simply adjusting the lighting, makes us more happy, comfortable and ‘Hygge’.
“The rule of thumb is, the lower the temperature of the light, the more hygge. A camera flash is around 5,500 Kelvin (K), fluorescent tubes are 5,000K, incandescent lamps 3,000K, while sunsets and wood and candle flames are about 1,800K. That is your hygge sweet spot.”― Meik Wiking, The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well
To do: Treat yourself to a nice candle this winter, light it when you intend to feel calm and comfortable. I like to light a candle when I’m journaling.
How Candles Help Us Feel Cozy
- A well-chosen candle makes a space feel more relaxed and warm. It provides a feeling of comfort, especially when compared to the harsh LED lights that we are so often exposed to.
- Candles are a very important part of the Danish coziness practice called ‘Hygge’ (pronounced “hyoo-guh”. Happiness studies often proclaim Denmark as the happiest nation on earth despite dark and cold winters. It is believed that Hygge-culture, where lighting a candle and settling into a calm activity is practically a national past-time, contributes to this widespread happiness.
